When using a dedicated build instance I think it would be nice if we could use spot instances just like the main rack allows for.

I agree this would be nice, but in the meantime, you might be interested by https://github.com/AutoSpotting/AutoSpotting to transparently replace on-demand EC2 instances with spot instances (just add a specific tag to the ASG).
